Let’s start with the facts.
Have you ever found a product or service so great that you had to share it with a friend? Just last week, I bragged to my friends and family about this amazing skincare product I found that has been clearing up my acne.
Why did I do this?
1. I struggled with acne for years and I wanted to share the news with my circle…nay the world that ya girl is achieving her clear skin goals that’s been on my vision board for-ever!
*Self five*

2. The product and service was one of the best I have achieved in a loooooong time and most people I know also suffer from skin problems like myself and could use the product because of the results I have achieved (which is mind-blowing).
92% of consumers will believe a recommendation from friends and family over ANY other type of advertising.
Before social and online media, word-of-mouth marketing consisted of one person telling another about a brand, product or service during a conversation. Kind of like the old ’80s commercial for Faberge shampoo.
There are many types of word-of-mouth marketing, such as:
- Social media – where users can share posts and talk about the brands they like.
- User-generated – which can take place on social media but can also come in the form of blog posts.
- Reviews – this type of content can originate on blogs, be promoted on social, and be shared to review sites like Yelp.
What is Word of Mouth Marketing?
Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) is the social media era’s version of simple word of mouth.
- Traditionally, word of mouth marketing was spread from one person to another based on recommendation.
- Modern word of mouth marketing describes users sharing their satisfaction with a brand on social media or review based platforms.
Word of mouth is powerful! And many businesses have now realized that this can make or break them. Hence, the effort to extinguish small fires before they start to go viral. Consumers have the power and they are not afraid to express any displeasure encountered to the internet.
I am definitely an active member of the complaint-roast community on Twitter.
